Volleyball 101 VOLLEYBALL POSITIONS

In a volleyball game, each team has a maximum players of six in the playing court. Each player has a designated position. One can be the Setter, an Open Hitter, a Middle Blocker, an Opposite or a Libero.

A Setter is the one in charge of the offense. She creates plays and directs the tempo of the attacks.

A Middle Blocker is the one responsible in the defensive end. She is positioned at the net to block the opponent's attack everywhere in the court. She can also be a Middle Hitter during the offense, usually on quick sets.

As the name implies, an Opposite is placed across from the Setter in rotation. She is accountable in helping to sets attack when the Setter is unavailable; and help out in blocking.

An Open Hitter is the main gunner of the team. She is the first option of the Setter during offense.

A Libero is the one responsible on floor defense. She can't serve nor spike. And usually wears a different color of uniform.

DLSU PORTAL: Lady Spikers- An Eye for One More?

It was a tough battle against the FEU Lady Tamaraws, a fierceful duel of might in the last UAAP Season 71 Women's Volleyball, for the De La Salle University Lady Spikers. Nevertheless, they survived. But what lies ahead for this team?

"Capt. Fireheart" Manilla Santos is out. "Sgt. D" Michelle Datuin has waved her farewell. What was left with DLSU? All task now will be shouldered by Stephanie Mercado. The Sweet Assassin will have to face a bigger challenge, alongside with the Jackhammer, Jaq Alarca without them.

Can DLSU make it twice in a row and regain the crown of being UAAP's powerhouse? That's what has to be seen.

Stephanie "Sweet Assassin" Mercado

UST PORTAL: Ma. Angeli Tabaquiero The Return of the Comeback

I watched a game between DLSU and UST in youtube yesterday. I cant remember really what's the date of the match.

I saw Angeli Tabaquiero smashing those spikes and the crowd kept on roaring, I mean the UST fans of course. Even De La Salle won that match (ouch! Michelle Datuin, i'll miss you...)

Well, i'm not really a Tigresses fanatic but I do like them. And I was so excited when I heard, I mean I read in the internet that Miss Tabaquiero, (ehem! I love her smile actually) will be seeing action in the UAAP. I hope DLSU-UST rivalry will rekindle once more.

One more pepz... Does it suits her to be called "Miss Turbulence"? Haha.

UAAP Women's Volleyball CAN'T WAIT TO WATCH!

It's August. And i'm beginning to feel anxious of waiting. I can't wait to see De La Salle University Lady Spikers in the hardcourt! How I miss to see those gorgeous ladies in green and white uniforms digging, tumbling, and spiking. I was just so sad to know that Michelle Datuin will not be playing this season 72. Ouch! But still, DLSU will be my apple of the eye.

And of course, I can't wait to see every teams. I hope this will be a better season. I mean more exciting and I hope and wish that all teams will give their best shots.

Bring out the ANIMO!

Hope to see NCAA Women's Volleyball on air. Anyone?

UST CAPTURED V-LEAGUE CROWN clobbered San Sebastian College

MVP Mary Jean Balse powered 13 spikes and finished with 18 points as the University of Sto. Tomas Tigresses captured its 4th title via a 25-18, 25-20, 25-22 rout of San Sebastian College Lady Stags in the 6th Shakey's V-league.

UST relied on Finals MVP Rhea Dimaculangan's witty setups most of the game, scoring an answer anytime SSC knocked a comeback.

The Tigresses, with Maika Ortiz on the attack, coined in on the Lady Stags' poor receptions to spurt a 14-7 advantage in the 1st set. But San Sebastian got back with 10-5 outbreak to closed in 17-19. USTcameback again, relying on their net defense to score 4 hits and capped the set.

In the 2nd set, UST erased a early San Sebastian lead, 2-5, and towered a 17-12 mark behind Balse's power attacks.

But the Lady Stags made a counter-attack and tied it on 20-all with Suzanne Roces and Jaroensri Bualee stepping up. However, the Tigresses made another five points surge to finish the set capped by Bernice Co's service ace.

Laurence Ann Latigay led San Sebastian College with 13 points. Roces had 9, Bualee and Joy Benito had 8 apiece.

"It's a nice feeling to win for the first time. At least we got back at the Lady Stags after we lost to them last year." UST mentor Cesael delos Santos said.

The UST Tigresses bagged the most winningest club record in the history of V-league with 4 crowns, shadowing De La Salle which captured 3 titles.

6th Shakey's V-league Best-of-three FINALS SAN SEBASTIAN SURPRISED STO. TOMAS, WINS GAME 1 IN 3 SETS

San Sebastian Lady Stags took game 1 of the 6th Shakey's V-league 1st conference Finals yesterday, shocking the heavily favored University of Sto. Tomas Tigresses, 25-17, 25-22, 25-19, behind a tremendous performances from Thai import Jaroensri Bualee and "Rapid Deal" Rysabelle Devanadera.

The Lady Stags are seeking for their back-to-back V-league title, the last one was also against UST.

Captain Laurence Ann Latigay, Analyn Joy Benito and Suzanne Roces combined for 33 points to help San Sebastian catapulted UST's first straight-sets downfall in the conference.

Sto. Tomas, who won all their meetings against the Lady Stags in the regulars, emerged struggled with their perrenial poor receptions. Even the comeback of scoring machine Michelle Carolino from Vietnam stint was never a factor. She was held to only 9 hits.

"Everybody played well. They all stepped up in the Finals," said San Sebastian mentor Roger Gorayeb. "We may have lost twice to UST this conference, but we won the game that mattered most. We controlled their main spikers while we did well in our receptions."

Mary Jean Balse led the Tigresses with 16 points, the only player to score in double figures.

Setter Vernon Ancheta has 79 excellent sets for the Lady Stags.

Game 2 is set on Sunday as San Sebastian hopes to end the best-of-three series.

6th Shakey's V-league FINALS UST vs SAN SEBASTIAN HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF

Raging University Sto. Tomas Tigresses will face their greatest challenge as they meet San Sebastian College Lady Stags in a best-of-three series for the 6th Shakey's V-league 1st conference crown starting this afternoon at 4 pm.

San Sebastian became the first team to hook up a spot after demolishing defending champion Adamson University Lady Falcons who will battle Far Eastern University Lady Tams for 3rd place in a best-of-three series at 2pm.

On the other hand, Sto. Tomas had to escaped a rubber match against FEU to gain a seat in the Finals.

UST had lost to Lady Stags last Season 5 2nd Conference Finals and now have the hope to bounce back and take what they thought was theirs.

Michelle Carolino, who's back from Beach Volleyball Tour from Vietnam, is expected to unload the attacks for UST alongside with superpower co-guest player Mary Jean Balse. To back them up are captain Aiza Maizo, Bernice Co, Judy Caballejo, Maika Ortiz and top setter Katrina Dimaculangan.

The Tigresses are favored to bag the crown, but the Lady Stags will not let it go that easy. They will be forefront by the dangerous Thai import Jaroensri Bualee and top spiker Laurence Latigay. They will get solid support from Vernon Ancheta, Joy Benito, Suzanne Roces and Sasa Devanadera.

UST coach Cesael De los Santos noted that in order for them to surpass the Lady Stags, they have to improve their receptions.

6th Shakey's V-league Best-of-three SEMIS GAME 2 SAN SEBASTIAN ON TO FINALS

San Sebastian- too strong to demolished.

Jeng Bualee scored 18 hits and Lou Ann Latigay had 17 to lead San Sebastian College Lady Stags in eliminating defending champions Adamson University Lady Falcons with a massive 25-14, 25-22, 25-14 rout.

The win gave the Lady Stags the ticket to Finals who will face the winner of the ongoing 6th Shakey's V-league semifinals duel between FEU and UST.

Adamson, with their key players failed to deliver, waived their chance to defend their crown. The absence of top falcons Nerissa Bautista and Joan Botor-Carpio proved to be fatal.

6th Shakey's V-league Best-of-three SEMIS GAME 2 RACHEL ANN DAQUIS STEPPED UP AS FEU FORCED GAME 3

UST is a tough team. But FEU was determined.

Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws relied on their tenacious net defense and the rallied to a 16-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-23 whacking of University of Sto. Tomas Tigresses to forcea deciding game 3 in their 6th Shakey's V-league semifinals series Sunday at The Arena in San Juan City.

"Princess of Power" Rachel Ann Daquis poured 13 kills and finished with 16 hits to lead the Lady Tams. Cherry Vivas had 12 points and "Mystic" Maica Morada added 11 kills.

The Tigresses, who played without scoring machine Michelle Carolino due to Vietnam beach volleyball stint, showed poised when they won the 1st set but shuddered on the next sets as they struggled in the net.

Mary Jean Balse lead UST with 22 hits.

Deal or no Deal? Better make it fast.

Rysabelle Devanadera, or Sasa, is formidable when it comes to attack. She can wallops the ball like a rocket launched in midair. Expect to be bombed! Or better yet, cover yourself up. Her quicks are rapid ready to rap you out of the map, err...court.

San Sebastian has made it to the semis in the ongoing 6th Shakey's V-league and took game 1 from the tough FEU Lady Tams in their best-of-3 series. And when the call of a hero was off, Sasa delivered. Fast.

With her powerful spikes come the dominating blocking skills. She's not intimidated by taller players. Dare her, she deals.

A force like Sasa, San Sebastian College Lady Stags is a one tough wall to subdue.

V-league Semis Best-of-3 Game 1 San Sebastian leads series, 1-0 RYSABELLE DEVANADERA SHINES AS LADY STAGS HORNS THE LADY FALCONS

Sets: 25-14 25-20 25-18

"Rapid Deal" Rysabelle Devanadera pounded crucial kills in the last two sets and emerged as the best player of the game as San Sebastian took game 1 against Adamson University.

After the Lady Falcons posted a 16-13 advantage in the 3rd set, Devanadera marshalled a 12-2 run for the Lady Stags that saw Adamson fumbled with their defense.

Jeng Bualee had 15, Lou Latigay had 13 and Suzanne Roces had 9 hits for San Sebastian who hope to wrap the series on Sunday.

Adamson played without main gunner Nerissa Bautista and Joan Botor-Carpio, had 10 points from Pau Soriano. Jill Gustilo scattered 8 points.

SKETCHPAD: 6th SHAKEY'S V-LEAGUE SEMIFINALS FORECAST UNIVERSITY OF STO. TOMAS vs FAR EASTERN UNIVERSITY

The semis is on. Four teams have survived. But only two will remain. Who will be taking fame? Who will be weeping?

1- UST (5-0) vs 4- FEU (2-3)
Forecast: UST over FEU, 2-1

Dynasty against destiny. This series is a war.

The UST Tigresses have overall advantage as they have beaten FEU thrice this conference. But UST will miss the service of the "Thunderbolt M9". Michelle Carolino was off to Vietnam for beach volleyball until Sunday. There's a possibility that she can play if game 3 will be necessary. Therefore, they have to rely on Mary Jean Balse. Well, not really.

"Capt. Ice" Aiza Maizo is a lethal weapon who can scores anytime and blocks at her finest. Maika Ortiz, Judy Caballejo and Bernice Co are reliable. Of course, Dmac (that's Rhea Dimaculangan, the setter) is threatening.

With Rachel Daquis and Shaira Gonzales has yet to find their forms, the FEU Lady Tams will have to rely on Mayette Carolino's classic but daring tackles. Macailah Morada and "The Vibe" Cherry May Vivas need to come up big time to back up FEU's attack. If these five stalwarts will be in good shapes, UST will have a run for their money.

Despite being perceived as underdogs, the Lady Tams will be out to battle the way up for their first ever V-league Finals appearance with their super combos and striking spikes. And I guess, April Linor Jose was not UAAP's best setter for nothing.

UST is at its best this conference. Although they have the tendency to collapse with their floor defense, I stake my dime for them.

SKETCHPAD: 6th SHAKEY'S V-LEAGUE SEMIFINALS FORECAST SAN SEBASTIAN vs ADAMSON

The 6th Shakey's V-league 1st conference semifinals are kicking off and here's my- if not personal, deliberate opinions on what the future holds for the teams.

2- San Sebastian (4-1) vs 3- Adamson (3-2)
Forecast: San Sebastian over Adamson, 2-0

Captain Lourence Ann Latigay is at her best form and Thai reinforcement Jaroensri Bualee is a steady threat with her powerful all-around plays. Rysabelle Devanadera has mastered the skill of power blocking. And last season Finals MVP Suzanne Roces is a deadly prowess. With an exceptional overall team performance in the conference, the road to Finals for the lady stags is as clear as the sunny sky.

This series will be quick.

But Adamson will not quit just like that. They have pushed the Lady Stags to the edge during their last meeting though they have lost that one. And that's what makes the Lady Falcon dangerous. They can match up with any tough team.

San Sebastian must stay focus if they want to nail the series. They must be aware of these: Sang Laguilles whose net defense is undeniable and a power hitter; Jill Gustilo can explode anytime; Angela Benting is sure to come out strong and Best Rookie candidate Paulina Soriano is very dependable.

But without superpower Nerissa Bautista who was out for Vietnam Beach Volleyball with fellow SSC guest player Joan Botor-Carpio, the Lady Falcons have to play double time.

Adamson is sure to give San Sebastian a hard fight. Their "never-say-die" attitude will be perceptible. But with berets like Joy Pulido, Vernon Ancheta, Analyn Benito and Margarita Pepito, I bet my two cents for the Lady Stags to snatch this one.

On Focus: 6th Shakey's V-league Best-of-3 SEMIS ADAMSON v.s. SAN SEBASTIAN

One's victory is another's heartbreak.

Defending champion Adamson University Lady Falcons will be put to test when they battle 2nd-seeded San Sebastian College Lady Stags in their best-of-3 semifinals series in the 6th Shakey's V-league starting Thursday at The Arena in San Juan City.

Both teams will pour their hearts out in this battle of the champions- San Sebastian being the beltholder in the 5th Shakey's V-league 2nd conference- to prove who is better, stronger and deserves to be called the "best of the bests".

Reigning MVP "The Blaze" Nerissa Bautista will front the charge for the Lady Falcons alongside with Sang Laguilles, Jill Gustilo, Angela Benting and super rookie Pau Soriano.

On the other hand, San Sebastian will fire it out behind superspiker Thai import Jeng Bualee, NCAA MVP Laurence Ann "The Silencer" Latigay and marquee blocker Sasa Devanadera.

The Lady Stags appear favored to bag the series as they have beaten Adamson twice this conference. But the Lady Falcons are out to banner their "never-say-die" power.

On Focus: 6th Shakey's V-league Best-of- 3 SEMIS UST vs FEU

The Semifinal battle is off. Four teams will combat for the crown. Who will prevail? Who will weep?

One match will feature the league leader against the struggling squad.

University of Sto. Tomas pulled off a clean slate to sweep the quarterfinals and headed to the front seat in the semis. While Far Eastern University suffered a defeat from Adamson in their spotfight. Thus, hurting their confidence.

Guest players Jean Balse and scoring machine Michelle Carolino will command for the Tigresses when they slug it out with the Lady Tams in their best-of-3 series beginning Thursday.

UST has swept all their games prior to semis, emerging as top favorite to enter the Finals. But FEU will try to regain their form that was imperceptible during the quarterfinals where they had struggled, losing games in straight sets.

To lead the charge for the Lady Tams are Rachel Daquis, Shaira Gonzales and the unconventional might- Mayette Carolino who will face her older sister Michelle once more.

On Focus PAYBACK TIME FOR FEU

FEU Lady Tams

It's payback time.
This is what Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws is aiming for as they battle bitter rival University of Sto. Tomas Tigresses 4:00 pm in the quarterfinals initial kickoff of the Shakey's V-league at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Lady Tams has absorbed a heartbreaking loss against the Tigresses who fought back from a seven-point deficit in the 4th set of their elimination round duel and snatched the game.

FEU will rely on their fatal four- Rachel Daquis, Macaila Morada, Cherry Vivas and Shaira Gonzales while leading the pact are guest players Mayette Carolino and Tina Salak.

It will also be a faceoff between the Carolino sisters as Michelle Carolino fronts the attack of UST Lady Tigresses along side with no.4 top scorer Jean Balse. Backing them up will be captain Aiza Maizo, Maika Ortiz, Bernice Co and Rhea Dimaculangan.

In the first game, provincial team USJ-R Lady Jaguars will test their power against powerhouse San Sebastian Lady Stags at 2 pm.

"Captain Ice"

Silent but deadly!

Venus Bernal is gone and it's over for UST.

Wait... Think again!

Aiza Maizo is out to prove you all wrong. She maybe underrated as what some folks would describe her presence but you should know that this gal is just a silent operator. She has once made the top lists of the best scorers and best blockers in the UAAP Volleyball tournament.

Maizo is a southpaw. So better be ready to defend because a southpaw can be a deadly threat. She can bury you down when she winds up for a kill. This hard hitting captain has so much to offer- and you haven't seen more yet.

Brick by brick she's building the empire of University of Sto. Tomas Tigresses that whoever will try to blight, better have a second thought. Just like a timed bomb- she can explode when you least expect.

Roar Captain, roar!

Defending champion Adamson University Lady Falcons will try to regain its supremacy in the Shakey's V-league Season 6 1st Conference.

Offense: 7 stars

She's not the NCAA MVP for nothing.

A defensive team like San Sebastian College is a tough wall to break. How much more when its key players are too much to handle?

Take Laurence Ann Latigay.

In every game, Laurence seems unstoppable. She can finish you with a pithy kill. It's not a surprise that this NCAA pride can dominate the toplist of greatness the v-league has ever produced.

Along with superblocker Rysabelle Devanadera and superb playmaker Vernon Ancheta, Latigay is a commanding force. That when everytime the victory seems to be slipping away from them, she rises up to silence the opposing power. And that's what best players are made of- heart and perseverance.

No one can deny that San Sebastian College is always a sure contender for the crown, with the "Silencer" on the wheel the Lady Stags can drive to primacy.

Strike on Stags!

Offense: 6 stars
Defense: 8 stars

Defense is offense!

The De La Salle University Lady Spikers have struggled in the last conferences with the departures of Michelle Carolino, Maureen Penetrante, Desiree Hernandez, Carla Llaguno and Chi Saet. Manilla Santos then must come up stronger.

But it was never the same DLSU squad we've known. They always come up short of the title stint. But still, they were the team to beat.

In those trying times, La Salle brought Stephanie Mercado on the attack and Jacq Alarca covering the fortress. Still, it wasn't enough. A hole was yet to be covered.

Then came Michelle Datuin, but she evinced to be just a pretty face. She's a shuddering post. But seeing the expectations, she dares herself to prove that she has something to offer. With the confidence her teammates have given her, she pushed herself to the limit- and it's worth it. Hastening her attacks with wit and hardening her blocking skills. Now, DLSU has redeemed its power.

Recently, they captured the UAAP crown when they dethroned the defending champions FEU Lady Tams in a dramatic fashion. Coming back from a loss in the first game, they snatch the remainings in their best-of-3 series.

And Datuin has shown what defense can do.

Along with superspiker Stephanie Mercado, Cha Cruz and UAAP top blocker Jacq Alarca, Michelle Datuin is DLSU's lethal weapon.

Animo La Salle!

Don't blink! You might miss something.

Beauty and brain. Philippine Volleyball has a lot of them. Here's one.

Shaira Gonzales is a sophomore. Now what? Well, she's hot. I mean, she's dangerous when she gets hot during a game.

Adding up to the already superb Far Eastern University Lady Tams' roster, Shaira is a hard hitter that can whip the ball as fast as you blink. So don't blink when she's up for a spike. You'll miss it.

This middle stunner takes no much effort in hitting the ball. She seems to know just where to put the points. Gone were the days when she was so shy to even tap a hit.

With a total package in her, Shaira Gonzales is the player to crave for.

With Rachel Ann Daquis and Maica Morada on her sides, "The Force" is about to make it big for the Lady Tams.

May the force be with you FEU!

Supergirl... Double time!

With all the struggles that the Letran Lady Knights are facing, a leader must not quiver.

It is the task that Bangladesh Pantaleon must carry on her shoulders.

With her booming superspikes, consistent receives and hard-fought blocking skills - Bangladesh means business.

Armed with determination, the 5 foot Lady Knight digs her team through a needle hole - and gaining momentum.

The Letran Lady Knights have struggled in the V-league and winning was farfetched in their last participations.

Young guns as they were associated, they were assumed as underdogs. But said, a heart of a wounded soldier couldn't be shattered that easy. Indeed, the Lady Knights stand firm. Bangladesh, with Cindy Octana, Mary Grace Burce and Joy Cases, leads her squad and teaches them what a determined heart should be - never say die!

And this is the Lady Knights' permission to shine!

Make way for the Saint!

Perhaps when you see the Ateneo De Manila University Lady Eagles at the courts you'll probably miss Pat Taganas and Carla Bello.

It will never be the same again.

The ADMU squad has struggled without Charo Soriano in the UAAP Volleyball League who was the heart and soul of their reign. Bea Pascual then had shouldered the spot. And she's doing a good job. But still, a "missing link" shuddered their campaign.

But as always, prayers were answered. Heaven has sent his saint.

Indeed, as her name denotes, Fille Saint Cainglet responsed. Coming off from being an average player, she proves both to the fans and the critics that she's not just another pretty face but a true gunner.

Her spikes dart like an eagle surging fearlessly. She delivers when the time calls for it. Attack or defense, name it she got it.

Along side with marquee hitters Gretchen Ho and Jam Ferrer, and the comebacking force, Ma. Rosario Soriano in the V-league, Cainglet provides a vital power to the roster.

Yes, it will never be the same again... It's just getting better.

Hail to the Saint!

It's not just her looks and the glamour that kills. It's the skills dude!

Rachel Ann Daquis has shown everybody that she's indeed a princess. But not your usual velvet-sheet clad girl... Uhm lady. She is the power.

Towering at 5'7'', Daquis can get you slipped down the floor with her spinning spikes and shattering blocks while keeping you wonder where the hell that kill came from.

She once lead the the FEU Lady Tams snatch the UAAP Volleyball League crown from the heavily favored Adamson University Lady Falcons in 2008.

With a solid line-up, including superpowers Maica Morada and Shaira Gonzales, the "Princess of Power" and the Lady Tams are surging for another supremacy.

Forward FEU!

Serene, innocent, humble - the words you probably say when you first lay an eye to on her. Yes, indeed. But wait. There's something more. See her eyes? Remember the fastest woman in the world- Lydia De Vega? Alas! She's the daughter of the great living legend. Now, wonder no more to whom she was made of.

This DLSU standout can boom a spike faster than a speeding arrow and more powerful than a baseball player's swing.

Huh.

She has a dig that will remind you of leila Barros, the main gunner of the powerhouse Brasil team in the 90's. And of course, isn't she the making of another Michelle Carolino?

Paning, as she's fondly called by her friends, is the top attacker of DLSU. She's the high-leaping junior that knuckles down the ball in a quick trigger. And that made her one of the most dangerous attacker. Her spike has a strong spin at the end. So better have a steady arms when you're trying to dig her shot.

With a superspiker in Mercado, the De la Salle Lady Spikers are out to conquer the courts.

Watch out people... Here come the champions!
Animo La Salle!
